UKZN Management Training at Master Builders. On August 22, 2023, UKZN Extended Learning launched the Managing for Impact (MFI) course at the Masterbuilders Association. This three-day intensive program was attended by thirty-three delegates from UKZN and facilitated by Dr. Shamim Bodhanya, Mr. Vikani Funda, and Dr. Rosemary Sibanda.

Day One| Team Building and VUCA Principles

The first day of the course focused on team-building activities, group discussions, and intellectually stimulating games. Role plays were also incorporated to highlight and explain the significance of the VUCA principles (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) within a working organization and a global context. VUCA forms the foundation of the Managing for Impact framework, emphasizing the need for adaptability and strategic thinking in modern management.

Day Two| Emotional Intelligence and Mindfulness

Day two delved into individual body and mind techniques, utilizing various videos and TED talks to emphasize and explain the importance of emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and personal mastery. These sessions aimed to enhance delegates’ self-awareness and emotional regulation, crucial components for effective leadership and management.

Topics Covered

Throughout the three days, participants engaged with a variety of topics designed to improve their management and leadership skills. These included:

  • Organisational Simulation: Practical exercises that simulate real-world organizational challenges to provide hands-on experience in managing complexity.
  • Managing Complexity: Strategies and tools to handle complex and dynamic business environments effectively.
  • Reflective Practice in Leadership: Encouraging leaders to reflect on their experiences and learn from them to improve their leadership practices.
  • Role of Management and Leadership in Contemporary Organisations: Exploring the evolving role of managers and leaders in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing business landscape, using the MFI approach.

Conclusion

The Managing for Impact course provided UKZN delegates with a comprehensive understanding of modern management principles, emphasizing the need for adaptability, emotional intelligence, and reflective practice. Through a combination of theoretical insights and practical exercises, the course aimed to equip participants with the skills necessary to lead effectively in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world.
