Flying the UKZN Flag High in Australia. The Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, under the leadership of Professor Ncoza Dlova, has embarked on a remarkable social media campaign dubbed #ProudlyMedSchoolAlumnus.

Since its launch in October, the campaign has garnered an overwhelming response, highlighting the achievements of medical alumni from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), both locally and internationally.

UKZN Recognizing Excellence

Each week, the campaign showcases the accomplishments of UKZN’s medical alumni, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and collegiality within the medical community. Among the notable success stories is that of Professor Yuben Moodley, whose journey exemplifies excellence and innovation in the field of respiratory medicine.

UKZN Professor Yuben Moodley Journey

After completing his undergraduate degree in Medicine at UKZN, Professor Moodley pursued a Doctorate in Medicine, focusing on non-invasive markers of lung disease. His groundbreaking research at the University of Western Australia has led to significant advancements in the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis and other chronic lung diseases.

UKZN Contributions to Medical Science

Professor Moodley pioneering work includes world-first studies on cell therapy for pulmonary fibrosis using human amnion cells and umbilical cord mesenchymal stromal cells. His research has not only been widely cited and incorporated into medical textbooks but has also paved the way for numerous clinical trials, including the treatment of COVID-19 ventilated patients.

With over $9 million in competitive funding and close to 120 impactful publications, Professor Moodley’s contributions to pulmonary medicine have earned international recognition. His work has influenced medical guidelines and informed clinical practice worldwide.
