UKZN Successful Obstetrics and Gynaecology Women Health Update 2024. The Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) orchestrated a dynamic Women Health Update in 2024, gathering leading experts, budding researchers, and committed advocates of maternal, child, and women health.

The event served as a platform to delve into the triumphs, hurdles, and pertinent cases confronting South African communities and the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.

UKZN Event Highlights

The two-day Continuing Professional Development (CPD)-accredited gathering took place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH) and UKZN Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine. Delegates were offered the opportunity to enhance their proficiency through concurrent workshops:

  1. Ultrasound Workshop: Conducted by fetomaternal specialists, this workshop provided insights into basic foetal sonography, fostering skill refinement among participants.
  2. Endoscopy Workshop: Encompassing lectures on laparoscopic procedures, safety protocols, and essential techniques, this workshop aimed at honing delegates’ precision and proficiency in gynaecological endoscopy.

UKZN Key Presentations

The second day of the update, held at the Gateway Hotel in Umhlanga, featured presentations by industry stalwarts addressing pivotal topics such as Medicolegal Litigation Associated with Birth Trauma, Updated HIV Guidelines in Pregnancy, Informed Consent, and Patient Blood Management.

These presentations underscored the significance of staying abreast of evolving medical practices in women’s healthcare.

Insights and Reflections

Dr. Neil Moran, an honorary lecturer at UKZN and provincial O&G Head, commended the dedicated participation of healthcare professionals throughout the event. He emphasized the importance of collective engagement in addressing challenges such as postpartum haemorrhage, reaffirming the commitment to advancing women’s health.


The Women Health Update 2024 epitomized UKZN O&G Discipline’s dedication to advancing the well-being of women across the lifespan.
