UKZN Medical School Honours its Living Legends. The Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) recently paid tribute to four distinguished alumni, acknowledging their outstanding contributions to science, medicine, and public health leadership.

These individuals, recognized as Living Legends, have played pivotal roles in navigating South Africa and the global community through challenging health crises, including tuberculosis, HIV, COVID-19 pandemics, and musculoskeletal diseases.

UKZN Recognition of Excellence

During the fifth annual Living Legends event held at the Medical School, the honorees, including Professor Salim Abdool Karim, Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, and Professor Girish Mody, were celebrated for their groundbreaking work.

The event featured a live panel discussion moderated by media personality Ms. Nongcebo Vukile McKenzie, providing insights into the remarkable journeys of these trailblazing figures in science.

UKZN Acknowledgment of Leadership

The event drew an audience comprising academics, industry leaders, professional staff, and medical students, who engaged actively with the Living Legends. Through stimulating discussions and insightful questions, attendees lauded the exemplary leadership demonstrated by the honorees.

In her welcome address, Professor Busi Ncama, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the College of Health Sciences, emphasized that the Living Legends initiative not only elevated the UKZN reputation but also highlighted South Africa’s prominence in research excellence.

She praised the initiative’s inception by Professor Ncoza Dlova, Dean and Head of the School of Clinical Medicine, in 2021, recognizing the often overlooked contributions of exceptional individuals.

UKZN Insights from Distinguished Figures

The event provided a platform for the Living Legends to share their perspectives on pressing health issues. Professor Salim Abdool Karim emphasized the importance of continually evolving health communication strategies to drive behavioral change.

His wife, Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, underscored the significance of perseverance and mentorship in achieving scientific impact.

UKZN Celebrating Medical Excellence

Professor Girish Mody, renowned rheumatologist, was honored for his dedication to medical education and advancing the treatment of rheumatic diseases.

The event culminated in the presentation of lifetime achievement awards to the Living Legends, symbolizing their enduring contributions to healthcare.
