Protest Details

Asanda Ntombela, convener of the EFF Student Command (EFFSC) at UKZN’s Westville campus, clarified that the protest was peaceful, although some classes were disrupted by frustrated students. The EFFSC emphasized the challenges faced by students, particularly those reliant on NSFAS support, who are often from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Rationale Behind the Protest

Ntombela highlighted that while the university may not directly control NSFAS disbursements, students should not be expected to cope with learning under challenging circumstances, especially when facing financial difficulties. Many affected students are beneficiaries of NSFAS and come from families working in lower-income occupations.

Conclusion

UKZN students advocate for class suspension amidst challenges with NSFAS allowances and registration. The protest underscores the need for immediate resolution to alleviate students’ financial burdens and ensure equitable access to education.
