Encouraging STEM Education

STEC@UKZN is committed to igniting a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among school learners. Led by Dr. Tanja Reinhardt, also known as Dr. T, the center offers a diverse range of activities including hands-on experiments, interactive displays, informative presentations, workshops, and captivating science shows. These initiatives aim to inspire young minds and encourage them to explore career opportunities in STEM fields.

Unique Offerings and Collaborations:

At STEC@UKZN, innovation is paramount. The center houses a Geology Education Museum, the only one of its kind in the province, showcasing a remarkable collection of minerals, fossils, meteorites, and rocks. Moreover, through collaborative efforts with other science centers and international partners, STEC@UKZN participates in outreach programs like Umjikelezo We-Science to extend STEM education to rural schools, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.

National Plan for STEM Literacy

Aligned with the DSI’s national plan for a network of science centers, STEC@UKZN plays a pivotal role in promoting STEM literacy, enhancing learner participation and performance, identifying and nurturing youth talent, and providing career education in STEM fields. The accreditation serves as a testament to the center’s commitment to these objectives.

Benefits of Accreditation

Accreditation not only establishes credibility but also fosters development and collaboration within the science center network. It opens doors to funding opportunities, facilitates communication among accredited centers, and enhances international recognition. Through SAASTA, training programs for staff contribute to capacity building, ensuring continuous improvement and excellence.

Conclusion

STEC@UKZN accreditation marks a significant achievement in its mission to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. Dr. Tanja Reinhardt and her team’s dedication and hard work have propelled the center to new heights, even amidst challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic
