Academic Journey

Dr. Bhorat matriculated from Crawford College, La Lucia in 2017, where she excelled with an impressive 87% aggregate. Currently serving as a medical intern at Groote Schuur Hospital, she reflects on her formative years and the mentors who shaped her medical education.

“I had the privilege of being taught by some incredible senior doctors throughout my six years at medical school, who pushed me to give my best – and that’s all I ever wanted to do,” she said.

The Rigors of Medical School

Pursuing an MBChB degree is a formidable challenge. Dr. Bhorat describes the six-week cycle of long days, extensive study material, and high expectations placed on young medical students. “One thing that you learn very quickly about the MBChB degree is that it is not for the fainthearted.

The six-week cycle of long days, high volumes of material to study, and expectations placed on a student in their early twenties can become very overwhelming, very quickly,” she noted.

Study Strategies and Support

Dr. Bhorat’s key study strategy was consistency. By reading a little every day, she built a strong foundation for her clinical years. “The greatest tool in my arsenal in terms of study strategies was to read a little bit every day so that I would have a greater foundation to build on once working at a hospital,” she explained.

However, she emphasizes that her family support was crucial to her success. Coming from a family deeply rooted in the medical field, she had access to unparalleled guidance and motivation. “What truly kept me afloat was the support of my family. I am in a fortunate (and unique) position where all of my siblings and parents are already in the medical field.

Not only did this help me when I could not understand pathology, but it provided me with proof that this degree is surmountable – if you take it one step at a time, day by day,” Dr. Bhorat shared.

Cherished Memories and Aspirations

One of Dr. Bhorat fondest memories of medical school is the friendships she formed along the way. These relationships provided emotional support and camaraderie through the challenging times. Dr. Bhorat always aspired to become a doctor, a dream subtly influenced by her father and four older siblings, all of whom are in the medical profession.

Conclusion

Dr. Maseeha Ismael Bhorat’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, effective study habits, and a strong support system. Her success story serves as an inspiration for future medical students, illustrating that with dedication and support, academic excellence is attainable.
