Professor | Associate Professor (Physical Chemistry)

The School of Chemistry at UKZN offers vibrant research and teaching programs at both Durban and Pietermaritzburg campuses. We aim to strengthen our capabilities in Chemical Thermodynamics and Industrial Chemistry at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Teaching Physical Chemistry across all levels of the Chemistry program.
  • Teaching selected modules in Chemical Technology/Industrial Chemistry.
  • Conducting active research and supervising postgraduate students.
  • Candidates from the industry must meet scientific criteria and demonstrate effective team management in relevant areas.

Facilities and Resources

UKZN boasts state-of-the-art instrumental facilities and well-equipped laboratories for both undergraduate and research purposes. Key facilities include:

  • Spectroscopic and analytical instruments: NMR, IR, Raman, Fluorescence, Singlet Oxygen Phosphorescence, Laser Flash Photolysis, X-ray diffraction (powder and single crystal), and electrochemical instrumentation.
  • Extensive HPLC and GC instrumentation, including LC-MS and GC-MS.
  • Materials characterization instruments such as HRTEM, SEM/EDX, BET, and AFM.
  • A recently established “university-wide” Nanotechnology Platform.

The successful candidate will report to the Academic Leader: Chemistry.

Minimum Requirements

For Professor

  • PhD in Physical Chemistry.
  • Demonstrated excellent teaching experience and leadership in curriculum development at the tertiary level.
  • A sustained record of publishing independent research in high-quality scientific journals.
  • Proven track record of supervising postgraduate students at the Masters and PhD levels.
  • Successful acquisition of external research grants.
  • Strong academic leadership within the Department/School/College/University, including mentorship and coaching.
  • National and international recognition in a relevant research area.

For Associate Professor

  • PhD in Physical Chemistry.
  • Demonstrated appropriate teaching experience and curriculum development at the tertiary level.
  • A sustained record of publishing independent research in high-quality scientific journals.
  • Proven track record of supervising postgraduate students at the Masters and PhD levels.
  • Successful acquisition of external research grants.
  • National and/or international recognition in a relevant research area.
