UKZN Hosts 2024 Parents And Orientation Days. The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) kicked off the academic year with a flourish, hosting a virtual Parents’ Day and Orientation Days to welcome new students and provide crucial information for the year ahead.

UKZN received an overwhelming 160,000 applications for the academic year, emphasizing the competitiveness of admissions. From this vast pool, 9,000 first-time entering students were selected, highlighting the exceptional abilities and potential of those admitted.

Insights from Leadership

During the virtual Parents’ Day event, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Professor Thabo Msibi, lauded parents for their commitment to securing a brighter future for their children. Meanwhile, Executive Director of Corporate Relations, Ms. Normah Zondo, provided an overview of the university’s vision and plans for the upcoming academic year.

Supportive Environment

Assurances were given by SRC Central President, Mr. Nduduzo Zulu, regarding the supportive campus environment, encouraging parents to advise their children to seek support from the Student Representative Council (SRC) when needed. Additionally, Chief Finance Officer, Ms. Nontuthuko Mbhele, outlined the fee structure and student funding processes to ensure transparency and accessibility.

College-Specific Programs

Each college within UKZN offered tailored orientation programs. For instance, the College of Health Sciences (CHS) conducted the “Navigating Your First Year Experience” program, facilitating the transition for first-year students. Professor Busisiwe Ncama, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College, emphasized the importance of support and introduced future health professionals to the university environment.

Inspirational Messages

Leadership figures like Professor Nhlanhla Mkhize, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the College of Humanities, and Professor Annah Bengesai, Head of the Teaching and Learning Unit for the College of Law and Management Studies, delivered inspiring messages, encouraging students to embrace curiosity, critical thinking, and engagement with diverse perspectives.

Practical Guidance

Orientation sessions provided practical guidance, including assistance with online registration, fee payments, campus access, and timetables. Daily interactive Q&A sessions ensured that students had the necessary support to navigate their academic journey successfully.
