Empowering Education

Initiated in 2024 by Mr. Sello Tefelo, a postgraduate student specializing in Financial Banking and Investment Management at UKZN’s Westville campus, the Bokamoso Edu Centre operates with a clear vision. Tefelo, also an Applied Chemistry graduate and a member of UKZN’s Student Parliament, envisioned the center as a beacon of educational empowerment.

Their mission is to augment the Further Education and Training (FET) phase of the South African education system by offering after-school programs. These programs aim to equip matriculates with essential skills necessary for their academic and personal growth.

Winter School Program

Marking a milestone for the center, the winter school program was held over two weeks at S M Jhavary Primary School in Durban. Participants hailed from prominent institutions like Bechet High School, Dr AD Lazarus Secondary School, Burnwood Secondary School, and Overport Secondary School. The selection process ensured a diverse group of students with varying educational backgrounds.

Skills Development

During the program, participants were immersed in a holistic learning experience. They received guidance on problem-solving, social adjustment, and self-esteem development, alongside academic support in subjects such as Mathematics, Life Science, Physical Science, and Home Languages.

The curriculum emphasized not only academic excellence but also the cultivation of essential life skills crucial for their future endeavors.

Community Impact

Beyond academic tutoring, the Bokamoso Edu Centre strives to uplift the community by providing essential resources. These include school uniforms, career exhibitions, guidance on university applications, and mental development programs. By fostering a supportive environment, the organization aims to nurture well-rounded individuals capable of contributing positively to society.

Empowering Futures

Reflecting on the program’s impact, Mr. Tefelo highlighted the transformative journey experienced by the learners. Through overcoming challenges and acquiring new skills, participants gained confidence and honed their decision-making abilities. This empowerment equips them not only for academic success but also for navigating the complexities of life beyond the classroom.

Gratitude to Sponsors

The success of the winter school program was made possible through the generous support of sponsors such as Spar, Sparksport, PPS Investment, UKZN Student Governance and Leadership Development, Jolly Meats, and Forever Fresh. Their contributions underscore the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing education and fostering community development.

Conclusion

The winter school program organized by the Bokamoso Edu Centre exemplifies the commitment of UKZN students towards educational empowerment and community upliftment. By providing a platform for academic enrichment and personal growth, the initiative not only equips matric students with essential skills but also nurtures future leaders poised to make a positive impact.

Through collaboration and dedication, such endeavors pave the way for a brighter and more promising future for South Africa’s youth.
